"I was in tears" : Restoring hope on the East Side - Meet LaTonya.

Your support does more than just clear away brush; it reminds neighbors like Ms. LaTonya that she isn't fighting for her community alone. Because of you, a simple day of yard work turned into tears of joy and a deepening journey of faith.

“My name is Ms. LaTonya and I am a homeowner on the east side of Detroit in the 48205 area code of the 9th precinct. This area is considered to be a challenging area but I love living here because I feel that I can help to make a difference by being active in my community. I started attending block club meetings and monthly community events and I happened to meet Mr. George Preston. Mr. Preston shared resources that people might need for assistance with some of their needs. I asked Mr. Preston if he knew someone that could help me with some yard work and he gave me a contact number for Tanya and she scheduled a date in a time for a group to come to my home. The group that came to my home was Camp Restore volunteers and there were a lot of energetic, young people along with their adult leaders. 

I was so happy and in tears that these people would do this for me and my family! They were also able to help my elderly neighbor with her yard. I called to thank Mr. Preston and tell him how happy and pleased I was and then he told me about the weekly summer picnics that are also sponsored by Camp Restore. I started going to the picnic, meeting new people and sharing good food and fun. 

Now I am a part of the weekly Bible studies that are led by Pastor Tim. The Bible studies are so fulfilling because we share spiritual teachings from the Bible, and before we start our teaching for the day we share a meal together. My life has been greatly impacted by Camp Restore because it makes me feel like I am part of a very good group of people that are making a huge impact in our community. Camp Restore has given hope to a community that needs a little love and care.”

It started with a yard cleanup, but because of you, it blossomed into a seat at our Bible study table.
