What difference does a mile make?
All it takes is one mile. One mile along a business corridor will either draw people into the community or turn them away. With almost a 90% reduction in residents, drawing people in is imperative to neighborhood revitalization. Neighborhood associations and block clubs are striving to do just that. Your generosity doesn’t go unnoticed in the neighborhood as your support has allowed Camp Restore to partner in these efforts.
Our corner of Detroit has a plethora of block clubs that organize projects to assist with different needs in the community. From pop-up BBQs to neighborhood cleanups, these block clubs are essential in creating a sense of camaraderie between our community members.
The Regent Park Community Association’s Tonya Wall hosted a neighborhood cleanup on Hayes Street, between 7 Mile and 8 Mile, back in June. The mission was big, nearly insurmountable. The goal was to clean up a mile stretch of this main thoroughfare by picking up dumped garbage and old debris, while trimming any grass, leaves, or other forms of blight, in order to restore hope and be more welcoming.
Together, community members, CRD volunteers, and the Landscape Academy were excited to make our community safer and more welcoming. Curious neighbors came out to see what was happening, and were blown away by the number of people who came to take care of dozens of yards. Some of these neighbors even came out to help with the mile-long project themselves! There was even a pop-up that lasted for a couple of hours in the afternoon, in which hot dogs, chips and water were served to anyone who passed by. This was a wonderful way for our campers, landscape academy students, and our neighbors to work alongside one another, share God’s love in action, making a difference in just one mile.
The day was proof that together, transformation - even transformation that seems impossible or intimidating - is possible! In spirit, you were there with all of us on Hayes Street, as your partnership makes these transformations happen. Click here, give now.
